Beside Ourselves
A man who has been homeless for nearly a decade finds it nearly impossible to get back on his feet. He is abused, judged, and ignored by society except for those in his shoes and the few who see him for who he is. Even the owner of a local shelter couldn't care less about his story. Yet with some assistance and support from a local barista, he makes one last push to get off the streets and prove to the world, and himself that he is capable of contributing to society again. At his lowest point, he cannot accept a job opportunity out of fear of what life will actually look like getting to his feet. He is ashamed when the opportunity passes him by and contemplates suicide and even dreams of it. Then he is picked up with a unique opportunity to live on a boat as a payback from a friend who used to be unhoused like him, with him. Life makes a turn and he has basic necessities again. A place to sleep with no bugs, a shower and bathroom, a kitchenette to cook and clean his dishes, and even a job at a bookstore.
